Merry Christmas Eve everyone! I took this week off blogging to spend more time offline with my friends and family, but I wanted to pop in today and share our HUGE news! We’re expecting twins!
I’m so glad I can finally share with you all. We found out I am pregnant at the beginning of November and were very excited! It’s been hard to keep the secret, but we wanted to make sure things progressed well enough for us to share — and they have!
We had our first ultrasound the day before Thanksgiving, which went something like this:
Doctor, ultrasounding me: “And there is baby!”
Doctor: “And baby number two…”
Ryan: *stunned silence*
Me: *staring at the doctor, waiting for her to say “just kidding!”*
Doctor: “No, honey, look at the screen. You have two babies in there!”
Me: “Oh my God.”
Ryan: “How did this happen?!”
Doctor: “Well, you were there, weren’t you?”
Needless to say, we were both shocked. We’ve had a while for the news to sink in, and we’re working toward excitement. The idea of caring for two infants is still overwhelming, but the more I read about twins and their bond, the more I warm up to the idea. I love that they are born with a built-in playmate, that they will have a bond with each other that few people have.
We had a second ultrasound this week, and everything looks great. I feel like I was able to enjoy this ultrasound more, since the shock had worn off a bit since Thanksgiving. Hearing both strong heartbeats brought me to tears — I am so thankful for these two little lives!
We’ve told some of our friends and family in person, and everyone had a lot of questions! So here are a few we have heard the most!
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Twins
Were you trying for kids?
We were trying for KID. But we got kids instead.
When are you due?
Early July, but that’s 40 weeks — and twins rarely make it 40 weeks. So we’re more likely looking at June.
Are they identical?
No, they are fraternal twins. I am an overachiever and released two eggs. Well done me! This means, however, that there’s a 50% chance they’ll be boy/girl twins, which we think would be awesome.
Do twins run in your family?
Nope. Well, they do now.
Were you on fertility treatments?
Honestly, it’s really none of your business, but no, we weren’t. Which made the surprise even bigger.
Are you going to find out the genders?
Yes. Because ENOUGH SURPRISES.
How are you feeling?
Overall, I think I’m getting off pretty easy with the pregnancy symptoms. I’ve had some general on-and-off queasiness, but nothing too bad. I have aversions to a lot of foods, but that’s finally slowing down a bit — the thought of chicken no longer makes me want to vomit. My sense of smell is ridiculously strong and I will literally murder someone with my eyes if they are smoking within six miles of me. But more than anything, I’m just exhausted. Bone-tired. A tired that I didn’t understand existed before I was pregnant. Growing an entire family in one go is hard!
How is Ryan doing?
He’s doing great! I think it sunk in faster for him than it did for me — he’s constantly showing me cool articles or videos about twins. He’s also been super helpful around the house since I’ve been so tired. He’s pretty much the best guy ever.
How can I pray for you guys?
Twin pregnancies can often be (but are not always) difficult. I would love your prayers for a few things in particular:
- That they make it to a healthy term and are not born too prematurely.
- That they each grow at a steady, healthy rate.
- That I am able to deliver them naturally, instead of by c-section.
- That I will avoid bed rest.
Of course, they are going to come when and how they decide to come, but I figure that I’m going to walk through this pregnancy with an attitude of prayer and positivity and hope for the best!
So that’s our big Christmas news! And we couldn’t be happier with these two beautiful gifts from God.
And a huge thank you to my BFF Amy for taking a few photos for us for this announcement!
