A while back, I was writing a post about the film The Hundred Foot Journey. The movie is about an Indian family that opens up an Indian restaurant right across the street from a fancy Michelin-rated French restaurant. Apparently the film worked its way into my subconscious, because that night I had a dream. In that dream I made some garam masala popcorn — the perfect thing to eat while watching a movie about Indian food.
Garam masala is an Indian spice mix that often contains tumeric, ground peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, cumin and cardamom — all toasted and smashed up together. It’s intense and flavorful but doesn’t carry a ton of heat. My favorite is from World Market!
Turns out my subconscious is brilliant! I put together a garam masala popcorn mix soon and it was GOOD.
1 bag plain popcorn, popped
2 tablespoons melted butter (because real butter is better than the yellow chemical slurry that comes with packaged popcorn)
1 tablespoon garam masala
1/4 cup yellow raisins
1/4 cup roasted cashews
Drizzle the butter over your popcorn. Shake the garam masala over the popcorn, to evenly coat the popcorn. Add in your other ingredients, and mix! Enjoy with your favorite Indian film, or even some Bollywood!
