As you all know by now, we’re moved into our new home. And if there’s one thing I forgot about moving into a new house, it’s how things go bump in the night.
Have you noticed this? When you’re in a new place, you notice new sounds. Especially when you’re lying there in the quiet of the night. During our first week here,a “ca-chunk” sound around 5:00am woke us up, even our dog, Gunnar. We’d all sort of stare sleepily at each other, wondering if someone was trying to break in. Gunnar would jump up on the bed with us for comfort.
The pup weighs a legit 110lbs, so that’s a lot of dog to comfort. Early in the morning. Every morning.
It took us a week to realize the “ca-chunk” was the sprinklers turning on. Once we knew what it was, we were able to reset it for a more reasonable hour (and perhaps not to go off seven days a week in the California drought!). But man, for that first week or two, we were on edge.
There are other things that go bump in the night at our house — our whole house fan turning on and off, the house settling, the ice maker making an unreasonable amount of ice, the instant hot water gurgling, Gunnar clomping down the laminate floors in the hallway, the neighbors taking out their trash to the curb at ungodly hours of the night.
Then Ryan left for the weekend recently and I was left to contend with the unexpected noises by myself.
I haven’t exactly slept well since we moved in.
So we installed PEQ (pronounced “peek”) in our home, hoping to have a little more peace of mind! We’re both pretty techy, so the idea of having a smart home has appealed to us for a long time. PEQ is a set of devices that work together to monitor and control your house. You receive alerts in the PEQ app about what’s happening in your home from anywhere, whether you’re lying in bed or traveling half a world away.
The PEQ Starter Kit includes the hub and one window/door module, but there are many additional devices, including a water sensor, camera, lamp modules, and thermostats. You can get your whole house up and running!
There’s a $9.99 monitoring fee each month, which includes linking unlimited PEQ devices, access to their user interface, customer support seven days a week, video and photo storage, live streaming to your device, and regular updates to the service — all guaranteed to relieve you from constant worries about the safety and stability of your family and the things in your home. Phew! So much more than a home security system, for a fraction of the cost.
We started by setting up the system. We did have to reset our hub once to get it working, but after that, every device paired properly with the hub. We set up the motion sensor to aim at the back door so that we would know if anyone tried to come in that way.
We set up one of our lamps on a module, so we can turn it off if we end up coming home later than we expected — no reason for Gunnar to hang out in the dark! We also set up the camera in the living room so we could keep tabs on our biggest noisemaker. Gunnar usually likes to sleep out there — now we can quickly look on our phones to see if it’s him making all that racket. This will also make an amazing baby monitor at some point — the picture quality is really great.
But PEQ did so much more than help us sleep a little better. A few months ago, we had a refrigerator leak. It damaged our floors, cabinets, and baseboards. Thankfully, it was covered under warranty but it’s been quite the effort to get everything repaired properly.
We now have the PEQ water sensor to tell us if there’s a leak in our fridge. Just having that little white sensor has brought us such peace of mind knowing that we’ll be alerted if the fridge starts leaking.
It’s a pretty cool system and I’m excited to learn more ways to make our home smarter. PEQ empowers us to live life on our own terms rather than being afraid of the things that go bump in the night!
