The other day, Elizabeth from Oh Fransson! posted a tutorial for this great Barn Bats block — perfect for Halloween! (Dear self, take photos of things BEFORE said holiday passes.) I shamefully stole her ideas for the colors as I made my own barn bats mini Halloween quilt, since they are perfect for the season. Then again, it’s not like Halloween is much other than black and orange, eh?
Not really sure what I did wrong, but mine ended up being a rectangle instead of a square. I probably just trimmed my strips wrong or my 1/4″ seam was less than scant, but it doesn’t matter — still cute! If you’re using her tutorial to make a block of your own, make sure to pay attention to how she lines up the bat wings with the bat bodies. I didn’t realize until the end I was about 1/4″ off for everything. It’s barely noticeable (the top of the bat wings should line up with the bat ears), but I’m a little annoyed with myself anyway.
Despite these problems, I love how it turned out! It’s backed in orange and quilted with 1/2″ wide straight lines. It’s perfect as a foundation for a centerpiece of pumpkins, candles, and other Halloween-y things!
Hope you all had a spooky Halloween!
